The Image of Nature on Paper
For Us and Them 24 which Tem, in its 25th year, will be holding currently, I wanted the exhibition to transcend expectations. Because art and collecting are an essential part of my life, this time, in addition to the other works in the exhibition I chose to share with my dear and esteemed audience my collection of original prints of more than a quarter of a century. There were days when I pondered for a week and consulted friends on whether or not to buy a Giacometti lithograph. Now I think how well-advised I was. It gives me great joy to possess Défilé de mannequin à Istanbul, the only work Miro did on Istanbul. I have many more like it: Mürşide İçmelis Owls; the lithograph Hakkı Anlı did for Im Erker, one of the most important galleries of Switzerland; and the woodcut by Fevzi Karakoç that won much acclaim at the Winterthur Woodcut Triennial.
Printmaking is a very arduous process, because the artist must consubstantiate what he or she wants to depict with a unit of nature, and this can only be done by penetrating to the essence of the material used, by grasping its qualities. And in the end, what is seen on paper is not just what is depicted but also the nature of the wood, stone, metal, or other object used.
Sometimes, when people are talking about art I hear such comments as I dont buy prints or drawings, I prefer paintings. I feel that these people do not yet fully appreciate art, that they collect paintings for one reason or another. Whereas I believe that true art lovers can find pleasure as much in an engraving or woodcut as in an oil painting, and because they can acquire a larger number of works due to price advantage, that they can easily acquire a rich collection of good artists, both from Turkey and from abroad. There are many examples among my collectors.
The scope of printmaking techniques is extremely broad. Just as plunging into the world of printmaking and beginning new quests for an artist who constantly paints on canvas will bring him or her new excitement, a collector too can discover fresh flavors in those different tendencies. Those who visit our exhibition will find the opportunity to see various tendencies and developments in the works of Turkish and foreign artists, to learn about the new and different techniques applied, and to compare the Turkish and foreign artists displayed in the same show, which is just as important as their approaches. In these original art prints prepared with techniques such as engraving, lithography, woodcut, linoleum, Carborundum, monotype, etc., the masterful level achieved by Turkish artists on the one hand and the experienced approaches of foreign artists on the other, will provide reliable knowledge about current practice in this branch of art which originated a very long time ago.
